Field hockey is a team sport played on grass or artificial turf in which two sides try to score by hitting a ball into the opponent’s goal with sticks. It is fast, tactical and tests both fitness and technique.

The basics of play

Each team fields eleven players, including a goalkeeper. Players may use only the flat side of the stick to control and strike the ball. Dangerous play, such as raising the stick near other players or playing the ball dangerously, is penalised.

Positions

  • Goalkeeper: defends the goal and wears protective equipment.
  • Defenders: stop attacks and start moves from the back.
  • Midfielders: link defence and attack and cover large areas.
  • Forwards: create chances and score goals.

Skills to practise first

Beginners should work on stick control and dribbling, accurate passing and receiving, and basic positioning. Good footwork and awareness of teammates help more than raw power.

Staying safe

Wear a mouthguard and shin guards, follow the coach’s guidance and warm up properly. Rules are updated from time to time, so consult the official governing body for the current version.

Takeaway

Field hockey rewards patience and teamwork. Local clubs and schools often welcome new players of all ages.
