App stores contain millions of options, and not all of them are safe, honest or well made. A few simple checks before installing can protect your device, your data and your time.
Check the source
Download apps from official stores or the developer’s own website. Look at the developer’s name and whether they have other apps and a real support page.
Read reviews carefully
Look beyond the star rating. Recent reviews that mention crashes, unexpected charges or intrusive ads are useful. Be cautious if reviews all sound alike or seem unusually glowing.
Review permissions
- Ask whether each permission makes sense for what the app does.
- Be wary of a simple torch or game that requests contacts, messages or location.
- Deny optional permissions and change them later in settings if needed.
Understand how it makes money
Free apps are funded by ads, data collection or in-app purchases. Skim the privacy policy for what data is collected and shared, and check how subscriptions can be cancelled.
Keep it tidy
Remove apps you no longer use and keep the rest updated. Fewer apps mean fewer things that can go wrong.
